2020 Athens Marathon

The Athens marathon was one of many events that decided to run as a virtual event from November 8th to 22nd. The Virtual Athens Marathon 2020 entry race kit included postage to all runners of the special medal of this virtual race, the official adidas running t-shirt of the event, and a personalized Participation Certificate. Furthermore, each participant received their bib number by email along with the entry confirmation note, in order to print it locally.

Helen Ferrucci-Nobile (SF113) decided to participate along with three of her friends who have participated in several Melbournes and Helen is hopeful that they will also achieve Spartan status.

Helen’s Account of the Day.
We started in Frankston and ran the old Melbourne marathon course but came up Nimmo Street in Port Melbourne to the Albert Park track through to finish at the Greek consulate in Albert Road.

We had a cool 7am start which built in humidity around the time we got to Chelsea. We were meant to run the 21kms to Beaumaris and walk the rest as none of us was Marathon fit but the wind and heat took its toll on one of the girls so we walked it after the 16km mark. To say that the walk part was easy would be a lie, I’d rather run even slow more than walk! Walking really made my feet so sore, funny that? So we encountered all weather conditions: rain in Beaumaris, wind till Elwood then the sun came out going through St Kilda to burn our shoulders and make the last few km that little bit harder. Nevertheless, 7hrs later we finished outside the Greek consulate!

Still had 3 more kms to walk to the car, think they were the straw that broke the camels back!

It was memorable. Would I do that again, mmmm maybe not, but it was fun in the end.
